Laika & The Cosmonauts was founded in 1987 by Mikko Lankinen (guitar), Janne Haavisto (drums), Matti Pitsinki (organ and guitar) and Tom Nyman (bass). Their first album "C'mon Do The Laika" was released already in 1988. The group has since then released six more studio albums, all with the same line-up. Their popularity in Finland and the rest of the Europe began to rise, surprisingly, only after they had made themselves a household name among the surf/garage/punk/alternative audience in The USA!

Highly recommend for anyone who wants quality surfing music. Perfect background music for your next surf party. Planning to buy more of Laika and the Cosmonauts.

Since the release of their Upstart albums, Instruments Of Terror (1994), The Amazing Colossal Band (1995) and Zero Gravity (1996), the evolution of instrumental sound of Laika & The Cosmonauts continues to move forward in new directions. Initially drawn to the sounds of instrumental heroes like Dick Dale, The Ventures and The Shadows, The Cosmonauts' musical landscape now includes surf, dance, film, space, electronica, world and even techno. Due to numerous SXSW shows, US gigs and even a tour opening for Ministry, The Cosmonauts lay claim to the most loyal and enthusiastic US fanbase of any touring Finnish instrumental rock band! There this foursome has released four original CD's ("Instruments of Terror", "The Amazing Colossal Band", "Absurdistan" and "Local Warming") as well as a compilation of their early stuff (from "C'mon do the Laika" and "Surfs you right!"). For these records they got rave reviews, good amount of airplay on the radio and won over the hearts of many famed musicians from "the king of surf guitar" Dick Dale to Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers' Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench. Other well-known Laika fans are Mike Palm from the surf-punk legend Agent Orange and John Jorgenson from The Hellecasters who, also played with Elton John for several years! In US they have done many nationwide tours, one of which was as a supporting act for The Ministry on their "Filth Pig" tour. The singer of Ministry, Al Jourgensen wanted Laika & The Cosmonauts to join the stadium tour because, in his words; "They are the best f***ing band in the world!" Just check out their superb live album "Laika Sex Machine" (2000) and you'll come to the same conclusion yourself. The music of the band has been also included in number of movies including Flipper, LA Without A Map, Fox Hunt, Blood and Donuts, The Iron Horsemen. Since the members are big fans of movies and soundtrack albums one of the main goals is to get the Laika-music on the big screen. Laika & The Cosmonauts is also continually touring Europe and their home country. They have done dozens of TV appearances (including a live TV-show shown all over Europe called "Absolut Live") and hundreds of radio interviews/shows in the USA as well as in Europe. In Japan some people might even know the band members from their work as record producers with artists such as "Lemonator", "Super", "The JP's", "Värttinä". A 20th anniversary compilation album is in the production phase. The record will be released in august 2008 by Yep Roc Records in the US and by Grandpop Records in Finland and Scandinavia. The album will also contain BRAND NEW, PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED MATERIAL - tunes Laika & the Cosmonauts composed for accompaniment to the Fritz Lang silent film classic METROPOLIS!!! To celebrate the 20th anniversary and the release of the compilation Laika & The Cosmonauts wil be touring Finland (August-October) and USA (October).

Ennio Morricone is one of the most identifiable names in the film industry. He has created countless scores for films. Even though a small portion of his work is specifically for the famous Spaghetti Western films, it remains some of the most popular music in the chronicles of recorded music. Nowhere has it been more treasured and emulated than in the surf-instrumental community. The twangy piercing guitar lines found in this music are what the ancestor’s of the genre used to separate their music from the pack.

This outstanding tribute titled For A Few Guitars More - A Tribute to Morricone's Spaghetti Western Themes is a testament to the love and admiration each artist that contributes to this compilation holds for Morricone’s accomplishments. Croatia, home of the The Bambi Molesters, (they cover “A Gun For Ringo”) and also the Dancing Bear label, which now serves as a distributor for established labels here in the states, provides access to music that was once elusive to the formerly oppressed country. Distributing a compilation such as this is huge for the country and indie music as a whole.

To start things off with bang this CD kicks off with The Penetrators injecting powerful surges of surf and reverb into “Guns Don’t Argue.” I have to be perfectly honest, every one of the 17 tracks on this compilation rocks with reverb and western twang. The images of cowboys riding their horses in a dusty hot burning dessert sun with Morricone’s music blaring in the background, setting the stage for the next climatic scene, is the purpose and essence of this tribute. Each band does a fine job in projecting that imagery through their music.

How could you possibly miss the mark with bands that call themselves The Hellbenders, Three Balls Of Fire and The Irreversible Slacks? Then there is Davie Allan’s rave up to the “The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly,” a real smoker called “The Loud, The Loose, And The Savage.” It is a sonic blast into a future western world and a special tribute to the man of the hour. The track is a fistful of venom permeated with the old and the new, making for a deadly rattlesnake’s bite. Allan and his Arrows close the curtain on this sunrise admirably, and along the way kick up plenty of dust with a real classic rockin’ instrumental that will have them talking from shore to shore for quite some time.

No duds allowed on this awesome tribute to one of the world’s most prolific masters of film scores. Believe me, you will not find one dinger on this CD. These guitars do not argue.

Langhorns, the instrumental surf band from Lund, a city without beaches.
Three guys along with a part time horn-section succeed, despite the beachlessness of their natural surroundings, in being a vital part of the worldwide scene of surf-music.
Their third full-length release; Mission Exotica is a delightful cocktail of all the stuff that has characterized the genre since day one.
Surf-music sees its first light in a time when rock & roll swings wildly from one side of the spectra to the other and literally every influence is invited to participate in the spectacular circus.
During a period of ten intense years surf music takes it shape: a hilarious mix of minimalistic blues-rock, jazz, psychedelia, R&B, flamenco, Latin-rock, Mexican mariachis and the seductive tunes of the Orient. The British invasion, however, locks the positions and puts an end to the heydays of development within the genre...until now.

"Recovering the sharpest punk rock style strikes, the Langhorns deliver a unique compound of a reanimated and driving sound featuring surf music style with rockabilly features.
Assembled in 1995 in Sweden, the Langhorns started off as a two-man venture of guitarist Michael Sellers and bassist Martin Berglund.
Following the duo's first experimentation sessions, they decided on signing up the works of drummer Rikard Swardh, that way defining the team as a three-element combo.
During the next two years, the group played various concerts and gained consistent exposure within the local underground scene, especially due to their intense live shows. In 1997, the Langhorns entered the studio alongside producer Magnus Borjesson to work on their first recording.
In February 1998, the team offered Langhorns released through the Bad Taste records catalog.
Following the issue of the disc, they played yet another considerable number of shows all across Swedish territory.
One year and countless concerts after, the Langhorns presented Club Gabardino, their second studio recording, certifying the band's cult status by then not only in Sweden, but also in the rest of Europe."

Puede que el surf y el instro-rock sean géneros minoritarios, pero no por ello reniegan de fabricar sus propias joyas.

El tercer disco de este trío sueco (también miembros de The Sinners) lo es: un puñado de composiciones que oscilan entre el puro surf, el spy, el jazz, la exótica o esos aromas arabescos que envuelven el temazo que es “In Your Fez”. Desde una irrenunciable solidez y un evidente espíritu energético hibridan y enriquecen el género con inhabituales aportaciones de programación e incursiones en estructuras más cercanas al rock “normal y corriente”. Todo ello bajo un envoltorio resumido en dos palabras mágicas: clase y elegancia. Desde el puro surf reverberado de su debut hasta este alarde de ideas y buen gusto, los de Lund se han convertido en una gran banda de la escena instro-surf europea, junto a otras como Fifty Foot Combo o The Bambi Molesters. Y lo mejor es que lo han hecho con un álbum capaz de satisfacer a los aficionados de muchos géneros diferentes. Sólo hace falta escucharlo.

Comentarios: The third full-length release from Croatia's surf monsters, The Bambi Molesters, is everything I wanted it to be and a little bit more. I didn't expect vocal tracks at all, let alone vocal tracks that maintain the spray and the salt of the waves. While some purists may consider these as intrusions, I find them exquisite. There are only a few of those, of course, as their bread and butter is and always has been instrumental surf music with a deliciously dangerous spy overtone. This is what we've come to expect from The Bambi Molesters and they don't dissapoint. The CD is crawling with intrigue, danger and atmosphere. Lead guitarist/songwriter Dalibor Pavicic's melodies are often simpler than those on the their last album, Intensity, with the emphasis shifted more toward atmosphere and texture. Instead of solid soloing, Dalibor and Dinko Tomljanovic interweave guitar lines for a full, intricate soundscape. "Farewell Malasana" is exactly that kind of song, so moody, dark yet filled with mystique that it sounds like it could be Emma Peele's funeral music. When they turn up the intensity, as they do in "Double Danger" and several other breathtakers, you feel the enemy agents closing in and your foot on the accelerator, oil and nails deploying behind your Jaguar as you make yet another narrow escape. A few years ago there were a hundred bands playing spy/surf music and only about five playing it well. Now there are only a few left, and luckily The Bambi Molesters are among them. If you've gotta pare down, at least keep the best. They're joined by several special guests, most notable among them Peter Buck and Scott McCaughey of REM, but the band is the story and chapter three is a good one.
